Road transport of petroleum products is a key vertical for the company. International best practice in driver and vehicle management ensures that a consistent level of safe and high quality services are provided. The company offers road transport services across the GCC, Asia and Africa.

WAREHOUSING SERVICES

Tristar’s warehousing facilities are designed, built and operated to the highest international environment, health and safety standards. Operations are carried out using Oracle WMS and Blockchain Technology with enhanced RFID for goods receipt, dispatch and inventory management.

Warehouse operations are periodically assessed by GPCA for Gulf SQAS and Management Systems are certified to covering ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001.

Buildings are certified to LEED gold standards.

DRIVER MANAGEMENT

Recruitment

Pre-screening: The pre-screening criteria intends to evaluate soft skills, technical knowledge traffic regulations, safety awareness, practical road test, and basic English reading and writing skills.

Medical Fitness: Medical fitness checks, that includes eyesight from the local authority and Tristar approved hospitals. All recruited drivers are subject to medical fitness every two years and drivers above 45 are subject to medical fitness every year.

Training and Mentoring

On-board Induction: The awareness session covering HSEQ policies, Procedure, Emergency Response, Stop Work Authority First Aid, Firefighting, Journey Plan Guidelines, Working, Driving, Rest Hours, Bulk/Pack Product Loading/Unloading, and Product Securing.

Mentoring: In-cab coaching for driving skills and abilities. Under study with senior drivers for familiarization with customer locations, loading and unloading, and documentations.

Final Evaluation

Training Evaluation: Pre and post training evaluations are conducted for their effectiveness.

HSE Passport: Evaluating the records of a driver’s training, Incident, Disciplinary Notices, PPE issuance and Appreciation/Achievement Records. Also availability of information about Emergency Numbers, Emergency Response Procedures, and Loading/Offloading Steps.

Re-training and Retention

Refresher Training: We conduct periodical refresher training through scheduled training calendar, Toolbox Talks, Quarterly Safety Meetings and Reflective Learning Sessions.

Drivers League System: Every month drivers are awarded and recognized through the Drivers’ League System. As per the system, drivers can earn points on merits like accident/compliant free month, number of near miss reported, and number of toolbox sessions attended. They can also lose points on accidents, customer complaints, traffic violations and any other disciplinary notices.

VEHICLE MANAGEMENT

Vehicle Standards

Vehicle Selection: Tristar follows customers and local and international standards (ADR) while selecting vehicles.

Vehicle Specifications: With Low Emission Vehicles, Reverse Warning Devices, Battery with Master Switch, Intrinsically Safe Wiring, ABS/EBS Braking System, Brake Interlock, Rollover Protection and Handrails in Road Tankers, Cabin Interior which is ergonomically designed.

HSE Critical Equipment

Safety Equipment: Tristar vehicles are equipped with First Aid Box, Fire Extinguishers, Spill Kits, Reflective Cones, 3-Point Seat Belt, Head Restraint, Rollover Warning Device, Fatigue Monitoring Device, and On Board Computer/In-Vehicle Monitoring System.

Vehicle Critical Equipment: Including but not limited to PTO and Pump, API Adaptors and Bottom Valves, Hoses and Fittings, Engine Shield Protection, King Pin and 5th Wheel, Under Run Protections, Exhaust System, Manhole Covers with PV Vent Valves, Tyre, Strangler, Lights and Wiring.

Maintenance Staff

Technical Staff: Tristar employs skilled and competent maintenance personnel for undertaking maintenance of the fleet. Detailed job descriptions are available for all positions.

Training: Ongoing trainings are carried out for the maintenance team to enhance competence where a new system, equipment or vehicle is introduced.

Preventive Maintenance

Type of Maintenance: Preventive maintenance has three types, Type A – PM is performed for vehicles at the specified intervals based on the category of vehicle; Type B - PM is performed annually inspection for all vehicles to assure the road worthiness; and Type C – PM is performed annually for all attachments (tankers and trailers).

Inspection and Testing: Inspection and testing of all critical equipment are being carried out as per OEM/required interval. The driver before beginning of each shift shall carry out daily inspection of the vehicle and the checklist is duly filled and signed by the driver on completion of inspection.

JOURNEY MANAGEMENT

Fatigue Management

Fatigue Policy: Tristar developed policies on drivers’ working, driving and rest hours to ensure they do not feel fatigued while on the road.

Fatigue Monitoring: Fatigue monitoring devices are installed in the vehicle, which allows the detection of early signs of fatigue and alerts the driver and the base monitoring station for any fatigue related issue.

Route Hazard Mapping (RHM)

Authorized Route: Tristar carries out route hazard mapping of all authorized routes. The threats and control measures identified are recorded in a stipulated format along with site pictures. Authorized routes are assessed periodically to incorporate any changes on road condition in the route assessment records.

Black Spot: Black Spots are identified and clearly marked in all route hazards mapping.

Journey Planning

Journey Plan: Tristar developed the Journey Plan for the purpose of controlling the working hours, driving hours, rest hours and also ensuring authorized routes and rest points are followed.

Pre and Post Trip Briefing: Journey Supervisors conduct pre-trip briefings to inform any deviation or development of any unsafe conditions on the road and the driver also report any deviation during the post trip briefing.

Journey Monitoring

IVMS Monitoring: All vehicles are equipped with On Board Computer/In-Vehicle Monitoring System to monitor drivers’ live movement. Also ensuring that drivers are not violating set guidelines for safe driving, which includes drivers’ working hours, adhering to the speed limits, harsh braking, harsh acceleration, etc.

Road Checks: Tristar conducts regular spot checks to ensure drivers comply with company’s HSE requirements which include using only authorized routes, safe delivery, adhering to the speed limits, usage of seat belts, applying defensive driving skills, carrying unauthorized passengers, etc.

HSE MANAGEMENT

Risk Management

System Approach: Tristar adapted the risk based approach and follows the Plan – Do – Check – Act (PDCA) cycle for each process.

HSE Management: Tristar’s HSE Management System is designed and built on the basis of the four major pillars, which consist of 4E’s: “Education, Engineering, Enforcement, Evaluation”.

Emergency Response

Emergency Response Plan: Tristar developed a comprehensive Emergency Response Plan which covers all key scenarios including but not limited to Medical, Fire, Spill/Leak, Vehicle Rollover, Security Incidents, Vehicle Breakdown and Major Collapse due to adverse condition/natural disasters.

Emergency Drills: To ensure the preparedness to deal with any emergency, Tristar conducts regular emergency drills such as mock and Mega drills every year. Authorities and customers are participating in the Mega drill along with the Tristar Emergency Response Team.

Incident Management

Incident Reporting: Tristar has a 24/7 hotline to report any incident. Tristar also developed an online portal called ‘HSE Online’ for instant reporting of HSEQ incidents and NMPIs.

Incident Investigation: All the reported incidents shall be formally investigated by the respective HSEQ and Operations Teams to identify the root causes and come up with appropriate corrective actions.

Continual Improvement

APEX HSEQ and Sustainability Committee Meeting: Meeting is conducted periodically to review and analyse HSEQ performances, upcoming HSEQ events, actions to improve, and Key Performance Indicator of HSEQ and Operations.

Quarterly Safety Meeting: There is a safety meeting conducted regularly and is attended by all drivers and ground staff. Government authorities and customers are also invited to participate. Refresher on various safety and driving aspects along with learning from incidents are shared. Appreciation certificates and awards are also given to individuals based on their HSE performance during the last quarter.

Tristar Risk Management

CRYOGENICS DIVISION

The Cryogenics Division offers transportation services, leasing of cryogenic ISO tanks and road tankers, in addition to consultation, engineering and intermodal transport services for cryogenic liquid & gaseous products. The division complements Tristar’s existing downstream oil and gas surface logistics business.

The Cryogenic Technical Center and Fleet Maintenance Workshop in Dammam, Saudi Arabia provides additional services like cryogenic fleet maintenance, design and supply of gas skids, piping installations, etc. along with the existing transport contracts with major industrial gas clients.

The center and workshop offer complete Repair, Evacuation and Refurbishment of Cryogenic Vessels, Dura Cylinders, Vacuum Insulated Transport Tankers, Vacuum Insulated Storage Tanks and Vacuum Jacketed Pipelines. The center occupies a 20,000 square feet area which is managed by a technical team with 20+ years of experience handling Cryogenic Assets and Vacuum Systems.

Tristar offers a wide range of remote fuel logistics services including but not limited to construction of fuel storage facilities for aviation and ground fuels in remote and hostile locations.

Tristar deploys competent and committed workforce to carry out operations under all conditions to ensure uninterrupted fuel supply to end users.

Tristar also operates a wide network of retail fuel stations in East Africa and offers commercial aviation and into plane refueling services at several airports in East and West Africa.

AFRICA FUELS & LUBRICANTS LTD

AFAL was incorporated as a Sales and Marketing arm of Tristar Transport Limited Kenya in the year 2011. The mission was to improve the quality of life by providing clean energy solutions through the supply of fuels, quality oils and lubricants that fuel everyday lives in accordance with the highest health and safety standards.

FUEL PRODUCTS

AFAL is registered and licensed by EPRA (Energy Petroleum Regulatory Authority) in Kenya as a wholesaler and retailer of petroleum products which includes:

  • Petrol Motor Spirit (PMS)
  • Automotive Gasoil (AGO)
  • Illuminating Kerosene (IK)
  • Aviation Fuels supplied at various Kenya depots including Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and Mombasa International Airport

FUEL STATIONS

AFAL currently operates 17 stations in various towns in Kenya which are located in – Nairobi metropolitan (Jogoo Road), Kajiado County (Rongai, Kiserian and Isinya), Nakuru, Eldoret, Kisumu, Nyeri, Eldama Ravine Town, and Muranga County (Kenol), and in Mtwapa, Mombasa County.


The first fuel station in Uganda is located 60 km from the capital Kampala along Masaka Road which connects the country to Rwanda. AFAL also operates six consumer pumps in Uganda.


AFAL is looking to increase the number of stations in 2024 by entering into more Fuel Supply and Branding Agreements with Station Dealers both in Kenya and Uganda, that will see the steady increase of AFAL’s footprint in East Africa, providing end to end solutions for both fuels and lubricants.

Steps are taken to curb the use of single-use plastic in offices in support of the 2018 World Environment Day’s theme ‘Beat Plastic Pollution’. This is integral towards environmental protection and has already been implemented in the UAE, Guam and South Sudan operations.

Tristar believes in providing access to education for all as per UN SDG No 5, on Quality Education that focuses on building partnerships to reach this goal. In the African continent, the focus on Quality Education is due to issues of poverty, inadequate educational facilities and low student enrolment. Over the past years, Tristar has supported the funding and development of two local schools in South Sudan to enable access to basic education. This has provided an opportunity for young children in those communities to pursue their education and build a brighter future.

TECHNOLOGY & INNOVATION

Tristar places utmost importance on automation and technology solutions to streamline operations and reduce costs. Tristar was the first logistics company in the UAE to adopt blockchain technology. Our warehouse management system and transportation platforms are protected by military grade encryption.

In 2018, 50 of our vehicles were fitted with a state-of-the-art Driver Fatigue Management System, which uses a dedicated infra-red camera to track drivers’ facial expressions sending signals to a monitoring center. Through these initiatives, we are proud to have achieved zero fatalities in over 150 million kilometers distance covered.
