As drivers are key to an effective operational and HSE performance, Tristar has developed a specific recruitment process for the drivers. This includes the following:
– Road test to evaluate the driving skill
– Technical interview to evaluate the numeracy, literacy, knowledge of regulations, knowledge of general mechanics
– Medical examination to evaluate health conditions of the drivers
– Police verification to evaluate any law violations
It is ensured that drivers have minimum 3 years of heavy driving experience and are above 25 years of age and below 55 years of age.
Tristar ensures that drivers are recruited only after meeting the required criteria mentioned in the driver recruitment policy. Induction training shall be provided to the driver and familiarization to Tristar’s various policies shall be carried out in this along with company’s other rules and regulations.
Drivers are further trained on defensive driving, fire fighting, basic first aid, etc. and they understudy with one of our senior drivers for one week to understand the loading and offloading operations and pump operations before being inducted to any trips. Customers provide further training on product knowledge and handling, site familiarization, depot safety rules and regulations.
Refresher training sessions are conducted periodically through toolbox sessions, quarterly safety meetings on various topics like near miss / potential incident reporting, learning points from accidents, emergency response, general mechanics of the vehicles, etc. Defensive training refresher session is carried out every other year for all drivers.
Tristar ensures that all drivers are trained as per the company requirements through a mentoring process that is undertaken during early stages of their employment. Abilities of the drivers in terms of their driving skills are therefore tested.
In addition, during in-cab partnering sessions the performance of the drivers is monitored. Any corrective action or training required is addressed at this stage. Driver Trainer or Mentor is the person, who at the early stages of recruitment, tests the driver of his driving abilities and gives the report. After recruitment, the Mentor keeps a track of the drivers performance at all stages, including in-cab monitoring, etc.
Tristar drivers are provided with an HSE Passport which contains all emergency contact numbers, precautions to take in case of emergency situations like accidents, fire, product spill, procedures for loading / unloading, bulk deliveries, handling hazardous products, defensive driving techniques, regulations for work at terminals and contents information about hazardous material warning labels.
HSE passports also carry information on driver merits like training details, toolbox meetings, etc. and demerits like traffic violations, accident details, etc.
Company policies, journey management guidelines, and route assessment reports are provided along with the HSE Passport separately with the Driver’s Manual for their ready reference.
Driver League System
Tristar has introduced the Driver League System to promote proactive safety culture among drivers. As per the system, drivers can earn points on merits like accident free month, complaint free month, number of near miss reports reported, number of toolbox sessions attended, etc. and can lose points on accidents, customer complaints, traffic violations and any disciplinary notices.
