The best drivers put the importance of safety for the sake of their families and also the safety of other people In line with the recent implementation of the amended Federal Traffic Law, a Dubai-based logistics company has shared some best practices on driving heavy vehicles. The tips are part of its CHEST (check every step) programme aimed at eliminating the 3Cs – carelessness, compromise and complacency – which often lead to accidents. “As a major player in oil and gas logistics, we are conscious of the potential consequences of an incident, involving road tankers transporting flammable products, and we remain committed to sharing our experiences and international best practices to make the roads safer for all users in the UAE and across the GCC,” said Eugene Mayne, CEO of Tristar Group, a fully integrated liquid (oil and gas) logistics company. Tristar Group has implemented a specialised driver training and support programme designed to ensure truck safety during the UAE’s summer months. With temperatures in the Emirates expected to rise above 50°C in the near future, the UAE-headquartered liquid logistics company has devised a scheme to promote safe operations in the scorching heat. The training programme includes guidelines to help operators manage heat-related fatigue, identify the safest routes, avoid road range, and take extra care when driving in high ambient temperatures. To support safe operations, Tristar’s journey management unit will distribute work in such a way that long hauls and difficult journeys do not fall on the same drivers frequently. The scheduling team, meanwhile, will work with customers to plan deliveries outside the hottest hours of the day. In turn, the firm’s workshop operatives will check that tyres and air-conditioning systems are in good condition, and supervisors will ensure... [...]
The hot, long summer days bring more challenges for lorry drivers on the road but every effort should be made to avoid catastrophic and fatal accidents, an academic warns. High temperatures can cause fatigue and exhaustion, which could reduce a driver’s concentration, vigilance and alertness and increase the risk of a crash. Drivers should be more prudent during Ramadan, said Dr Daniel Albuquerque, assistant professor of transportation engineering at UAE University. “Tailgating and speeding should be rigorously avoided, as drivers’ reaction time may be slower than what it would be if drivers were not fasting,” he said. “Ultimately, they need to keep in mind that driving is a mentally demanding activity. Since their ability to focus and react may be temporarily impaired due to long fasting periods, driving may not be a safe activity to be involved in.” Bangladeshi Mohammed Abdul Kalam, who has been driving a tanker...
